The Wedding Banquet

Directed by Ang Lee, this groundbreaking film follows Wai-Tung (Winston Chao), a gay Taiwanese immigrant living happily in New York with his partner Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein). Under relentless pressure from his traditional parents to marry, Wai-Tung arranges a sham marriage with Wei-Wei (May Chin), a mainland Chinese woman who needs a green card.

The scheme spirals out of control when his parents fly to America and insist on an elaborate wedding banquet. What begins as a simple arrangement becomes a comedy of escalating deception that ultimately forces all parties to confront the truth. One of the most directly on-topic lavender marriage films ever made, it won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
