One of the first mainstream Hollywood films to address a married man coming out, Making Love stars Michael Ontkean as Zack, a married oncologist who has been suppressing his attraction to men throughout his marriage to Claire (Kate Jackson). When he falls in love with Bart (Harry Hamlin), a charismatic gay writer, the marriage that had functioned as a cover begins to dissolve.

Groundbreaking for its time, the film was produced by 20th Century Fox at a moment when major studios avoided openly gay storylines. While it received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially—partly due to audience discomfort with the subject—it remains historically significant as one of the first studio films to sympathetically portray a closeted married gay man.
