Disobedience

Rachel Weisz stars as Ronit, a lesbian woman who returns to her Orthodox Jewish community after her father's death and reconnects with her childhood love Esti (Rachel McAdams), who is now married to their mutual male friend Dovid (Alessandro Nivola).

Esti's marriage to Dovid functions as a lavender marriage—she married him to conform to community expectations while suppressing her lesbian identity. Directed by Sebastian Lelio, the film explores the devastating cost of religious and social pressure on queer women forced into heterosexual marriages, and the question of whether authentic self-expression is possible within a deeply traditional world.
